2013 Paragliding World Cup South AfricaParagliding World Cup Porterville 2013
South Africa will be hosting a Paragliding World Cup event, to take place at the world-renowned flying site of Porterville, from 23 February to 2 March 2013.
When? 23 February to 3 March 2013 Where? Cederberg Mountains, Western Cape. Meet centre in Porterville, Western Cape, and launch sites at Pampoenfontein or Dasklip. How many pilots? 133 pilots are currently expected (of which 13 are women) How many SA pilots? 20 pilots (of which 2 are women) What are our chances of winning? The caliber of competitors is very high. Andre Rainsford-Alberts, ceded 1 in South Africa and 49 in the world is one of the favourites to win. He has an impressive paragliding track record including being 1st on 8 occasions in Porterville (4 X All Africa, 1 X Nationals, 2 X Winelands & 1 X pre-World Cup) What is the format of the competition? Cross country flying competition where competitors are given specific routes to fly, via a set of waypoints that are uploaded to their GPSs. The person who flies the route in the fastest time and who leads the task most of the way wins the day. Tasks can be anywhere between 40km or 120km long.
The event is one of six events in the international Paragliding World Cup tour, which sees the world’s top ranked competition pilots competing at the highest level of this free flying sport. It is also the first event of its kind to be held on the African continent.
The small Western Cape town of Porterville is often referred to as the paragliding and hang gliding mecca of South Africa and has a well-earned reputation worldwide for delivering challenging and exciting competition tasks over the picturesque Cederberg mountains.
Participation in the event is on a qualification basis and pilots from countries including France, Switzerland, USA, Germany, Venezuela, Spain, Portugal and the Nordic countries, to name a few, are expected to attend. The field will also include top ceded South African paragliding pilots, including world distance record holder Nevil Hulett, who flew an incredible 502.9km in December 2008.
Livetracking Historically cross country paragliding competitions have not really been a spectator sport (apart from at launch and goal), however the spectator value has been revolutionised with the introduction of personal tracking devices. Live tracking has been instrumental in creating ‘armchair-viewing’ of flying a course of turn-points and racing against fellow competitors via the internet. Each competitor carries with him/her a small tracking device that remits the location to a server, and uploads the location of everyone in the field to a website, which can be viewed from anywhere in the world, in close to real time (ten second delays).
